Work plan

1.      Research activities

The research of our office concerned various aspects. The development of China’ agricultural economy in the last 20 years has been so fast that we have to change our research fields year by year. Our research in the last five years concerns regional planning, agricultural resource development, agricultural project funded by World Bank, rural poverty, agricultural technological development, cereals development, cereals futures market, China’s entry into WTO, adjustment of agricultural structure, etc. All the research severs the relative departments of government.

Since the beginning of 1999, most agricultural departments of government at county level in our province have purchased computers, so we began to prepare to draw software for the relative agricultural departments of government. It proves that it is not easy to make such software because the people whose major is agricultural economics or economic management are not good at computer, especially programming, and the people whose major is computer know little about agriculture, besides they are not willing to enter the fields concerned agriculture because they can not earn much money in such fields. So we have to do it by ourselves.

Last year we tried to draw a simple program by MS Access and VBA for the agricultural department of government at county level. Up to now, three counties have used the program and they think that the program is helpful. This encourages us greatly, so we decide to learn more to draw better software, and hope someday we can make a comprehensive MIS. We have sent two people to universities to study relative knowledge. One study GIS, one study VB. We plan to use VB, Access, MS SQL Sever, GIS, to draw a software for agricultural department at county level in one or two years. My task is to design the program and allocate the concrete tasks to other participants. So I have to be familiar to relative software in other countries and be familiar to VB, Access, MS SQL Server, GIS. Now I am familiar with VB and Access, and the GIS such as MapInfo.

2.      Study plan

So there are two goals for my study here.

First, I hope to know what you have done and how you did on the aspect of agricultural management, such as forecasting, data-mining, expert system, etc.. And I also hope to collect some information about other Europe countries on this aspect. The agriculture in China is different from Europe; however, I believe your experience will be very helpful.

The second goal is to learn some program language or programming skills by participating in certain projects, such as Oracle, if possible.
